Have you ever wondered, “Does God even hear me?” But then, in the midst of that bad day, someone says or does something that just turns it all around. Or you were worried about something and you hear exactly what you need to hear through a sermon, a friend, or even the radio. That’s God! He hears you. He sees you. He knows exactly what you need.
God saw Hagar and her son when then ran away and had no water. God heard their cries and gave them what they needed. While today’s lesson won’t go into how God did not give them what they “wanted” but just what they “needed” it is something us adults need to consider. Hagar needed water but also “wanted” to get away from Sarah. God gave her water, a need, and sent her back to Sarah. That’s not what Hagar wanted to do but God knew she would be safe there and He knew that’s what she “needed.”
Here’s a snapshot of what we’ll show the kids this week:
Bible Story Focus: God hears me and gives me what I need. (Hagar • Genesis 21:14-20)
Memory Verse: “God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9, NLT
Key Question: Who’s got it?
Bottom Line: God’s got it.
Bible Story & Worship
Watch this video with your kids so you can recap and discuss it with them in the “Bring Jesus To Their Level” section. Then get ready to dance and sing for God. Remember, whatever you do, if you do it for God, it is a form of worshipping Him.

Next, we have an activity sheet and coloring page to help reinforce what they’ve learned. Be sure to watch the video on how to do the hand motions with the memory verse. This helps our young kids remember more easily. Be sure to practice each week so you can reward them with a special prize at the end of the month when they can say it all by themselves.

Bring Jesus To Their Level
Finish up your church at home by recapping the story and practicing the memory verse. God gave Hagar and her son water. He heard them and gave them what they needed. God takes care of each of us in so many ways. Make a list with your family of things we have at home that we need. It can be anything! Water, food, family, friends, clothes, a bed . . . anything! (You may need to guide them in knowing between wants vs. needs.) Use the list as you pray together.
PRAYER: “Dear God, You know everything we need because You are always with us. You know we need (read the list your family made). Thank You for loving us and giving us what we need. Help us trust that You know what is best and You have the power to give us what we need. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name.”
As we wrap up, I’d like to leave you with one of the kids’ favorite ‘good-bye’ songs:
Let Me See Your Alligator
Thank you for the opportunity to partner with you in the discipleship of your kid(s). It’s not always easy to guide your own kids through the Bible but it is my hope that these lessons will be the “graceful ornament” on their heads as they grow in the truth of the Lord. My prayers are with you.
“My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother; for they will be a graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck.”
