Elementary, August 15: Cain and Abel

Hi Journey Kids parents!

We don’t know exactly why God rejected Cain’s offering, but most scholars seem to think it’s because Abel brought the best of his herd while Cain brought the leftovers of his harvest. God wants the best we have to offer. When we come to Him with a posture any less we open ourselves up to sin. And sin wants to take us. It wants to consume us. That’s what we’re talking about this week.

When it’s time to begin, start your morning of family worship by watching the short lesson video with your kids. [You can access the videos here.] It’s a great way to engage spiritually with your family.

Here is a snapshot of the lesson details for this week:

Bible Story: Cain and Abel

Big Idea: God is holy and wants us to turn toward Him and away from sin.

Memory Verse: “If you don’t do what is right, sin is waiting at your door to grab you. It longs to have you. But you must rule over it.” Genesis 4:7 (NIrV)

After the video lesson and music, you can use the attached materials to help take your family deeper into the lesson:

I don’t know where you’re tempted to give God less than everything. But I pray that you turn from whatever you’re withholding from Him and, instead, turn over everything. Don’t let sin grab you. You have everything you need to rule over it.
