How to Overcome Challenges to Faith in Today’s World

Many believers struggle to maintain their faith in the modern-day landscape. It’s an issue that affects the entire body of Christ. Distraction from God’s Word and the desire for worldly pleasures are some of the biggest challenges to faith in today’s world. However, there are many more if you dig deeper.

As followers of Christ, we must understand these challenges—not just for our sake but for the sake of the unreached.

Why Understanding Challenges to Faith Is Important

It’s not uncommon to have your faith tested. In fact, it’s to be expected. God tests the faith of all believers by sending trials. However, these trials tend to be on a more personal level.

The challenges to faith in today’s world affect people on a much larger scale. As society evolves, questions and doubts arise. Faith in Jesus is scrutinized, and believers are under greater pressure to defend their beliefs.

Understanding these challenges equips us with the tools necessary to navigate an increasingly complex world. When you’re aware of them you can…

  • Engage in meaningful dialogue
  • Strengthen your own convictions
  • Foster empathy for others

In addition to developing more resilient faith, you can better position yourself for biblical discipleship

Ultimately, identifying the temptations and challenges facing the body of Christ is vital to overcoming them.

What Are the Challenges to Faith in Today’s World?

Matthew 19:16-22 tells the story of a wealthy young man who approached Jesus and asked Him how to obtain eternal life. When Jesus responded by advising him to sell his possessions and give to the poor, the man ignored His instructions.

If people were faced with the same dilemma today, many would likely choose to walk away from the church and disobey God’s teachings rather than part with their material possessions.

The case of people leaving the church is not just an issue affecting select churches or congregations. It’s a global trend that, unfortunately, isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

“But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.”—Luke 8:13

As the verse above explains, a deeply rooted faith is vital in maintaining our commitment to the Word of God. But when our faith has no roots, it is easy for temptation to wash it away. Below are some of the biggest faith challenges that can erode the roots of faith or prevent them from taking hold.

1. ) The Logical Challenge

Scientific advancement and development abound in the modern world. As new scientific breakthroughs are achieved, people question their existing knowledge and ideologies. For some whose faith is not deeply rooted, it makes them lose hope and question God.

Many experience intellectual struggles. For example, the scientific community challenges religious beliefs and uses science to question the creation narrative.

Without the support of biblical community and God’s Word, it’s easy for individuals to be swayed by such arguments. As a result, they begin to doubt their beliefs.

2. ) The Spiritual Challenge

Many believers who come to the church do so because of God. However, some churches have strayed from teaching His Word. This has led many to question: Where is God in the church?

It’s a valid criticism of the church and among the major challenges to faith today. When people come for biblical truth and don’t receive it, they often walk away for good.

3. ) The Cultural Challenge

It’s essential to live by God’s authority. However, that can be difficult to do in today’s society. Our culture has been warped by the enemy. He introduced secularism to draw us further from God.

When culture appears more Babylonian than biblical, believers struggle. They feel pressured to conform to the ways of man. Worse, they may be persecuted for their beliefs.

4. ) The Lifestyle Challenge

Modern society is characterized by individuals leading hectic daily schedules. Demands from work, family, and other personal pursuits can easily take time away from religious activities and participation in biblical community.

This is one of the biggest faith challenges in our world today because not everyone has enough motivation to carve out time from their busy schedules to go to church or study God’s Word.

When a person is dealing with major life events, such as parenthood or a career shift, it can become yet another obstacle.

5. ) The Community Challenge

Ironically, one of the challenges to faith is the lack of community within the church.

A feeling of connection with other believers can go a long way in guarding one’s faith. However, some believers simply don’t engage. They don’t look for opportunities to form bonds with other members. Further, they disregard the importance of participating in fellowship.

If we go back to the first-century church, we can see that a deep sense of community helped it thrive. It’s one aspect that we need to emphasize in the church. We need to stress the value and benefits of biblical community and welcome new people with open arms.

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”—Acts 2:42

3 Ways to Overcome the Challenges to Faith

Although there are many challenges to faith today, it is possible to overcome them. Whether you’re struggling or want to become a better disciple, the tips below can help.

Reach out to God with Prayer

“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”—Matthew 6:6

As a believer, how often do you pray? Many see prayer as an afterthought. Most don’t even pray once a day in today’s busy modern world.

However, prayer is a commitment we make toward God. Further, it helps us grow closer to Him despite the challenges we face. Saying a prayer and making it a part of our daily routine is the best way to strengthen our faith and maintain our commitment to our biblical community.

Partake in Biblical Community

“Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”—1 Corinthians 1:10

Biblical community helps deepen one’s faith. It plays a vital role in overcoming the challenges to faith in today’s world. Interacting with fellow believers energizes us spiritually and renews our commitment to our faith.

We can actively participate in the local church, join fellowship activities, or engage in a weekly Bible study. These faith-based activities can strengthen our bond with others who follow Christ and allow us to nurture each other spiritually.

Spread Kindness

Our faith and commitment to follow God’s Word are only as good as our actions.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”—Matthew 5:16

This verse perfectly exemplifies the importance of applying what we’ve learned from God’s example and paying it forward. Spreading kindness toward others helps them see God’s Word through our actions. There is no better way to strengthen our faith or encourage others to follow Christ than that!

The Role of Support in Addressing Challenges to Faith

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”—Galatians 6:2

Having support from fellow believers is one of the most important ways of overcoming faith challenges in today’s world. And that’s where biblical community comes in. Doing life together with other Christians is the essence of biblical community. Engaging in faith-based activities and establishing fellowship with one another makes us all stronger.

  • Regular gatherings provide an avenue to share experiences that reinforce beliefs and deepen our understanding of God’s teachings.
  • Believers offer encouragement, motivation, and support for one another, especially when facing challenging times.
  • Sharing testimonies of answered prayers strengthens the community’s collective faith in God.
  • Providing intercession of each other’s needs fosters a sense of community and deepens reliance on God.
  • Serving the poor and those in need through volunteer efforts and charitable activities further demonstrates the community’s mission.

Takeaway

Praying, participating in biblical community, and spreading kindness are all crucial to maintaining one’s faith. There are so many challenges to faith in today’s world. However, the encouragement and growth we can achieve through our connections and actions can’t be understated. Even the Bible emphasizes the value of asking for God’s guidance, sharing our burdens, and reflecting His goodness through our deeds.
