How to Become a Man or Woman After God’s Own Heart

When David faced Goliath, he was confronted with a seemingly impossible challenge. Goliath was a giant Philistine warrior who intimidated the Israelite army. Despite that, David remained steadfast and demonstrated what living after God’s own heart is like. Instead of succumbing to his fear of Goliath, David’s faith and trust in God remained strong, even though he only had a sling and stone as his weapon.

To foster a strong relationship with God, we must learn to demonstrate a similar depth of obedience and courage. This requires a display of humility, acknowledgment of our shortcomings, and surrender to God.

Qualities of David as a Man After God’s Own Heart

“I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.”Acts 13:22 (emphasis added)

David set the example of what it is like to become a man after God’s own heart, and this verse perfectly encapsulates that. If we desire to follow God’s will, it is essential to understand David’s qualities that resonate with God.

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed

That I would see the goodness of the Lord

In the land of the living. Wait on the Lord;

Be of good courage,

And He shall strengthen your heart;

Wait, I say, on the Lord!”—Psalm 27:13-14

David had an unwavering faith in God. That’s why he is the best example of how to be a man or a woman after God’s own heart. Despite his tribulations and enemies, he remained faithful to God and continued to trust in Him. He felt reassured that God would act on his behalf, which gave him profound reliance on what God could do in his life amidst the challenges.

It starts with knowing the heart of God and His intentions for our lives so that we can gain that confidence and unwavering faith, just like David exhibited.

In addition to being faithful, David was courageous and bold. He did not succumb to fear despite the enormity of his foe. He believed in the power of God, and that gave him the courage to stand up to his enemy. This perfectly symbolizes his approach to life and faith; obstacles didn’t deter him, as he knew God was always on his side.

“Then David said to the Philistine, ’You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’”1 Samuel 17:45

A repentant heart acknowledges sins and humbly repents before God. David’s heart perfectly exemplifies contrition when he sinned against Bathsheba and her husband. When confronted for his sins, David made no excuses for his wrongdoings. Instead, he acknowledged his transgression and pleaded for forgiveness from God and those he committed sins against.

By acknowledging his sins, David showed that he was a man after God’s own heart and followed His example. This was the first step in achieving the cleansing of his sins and experiencing God’s mercy.

5 Ways to Become a Man or a Woman After God’s Own Heart

A couple reading the Bible and praying together as an example of a man and a woman after God’s own heart.

Desiring to be a man of God is one thing; taking the necessary steps to seek after God’s own heart is another.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He shall direct your paths.”—Proverbs 3:5-6

We can learn much from David about loving, believing in, and submitting to God. But truly becoming a man or woman after God’s own heart requires action. Follow these ways to transform yourself into a son or daughter of God and live according to His will.

     1. Love God above All Else

Loving God is the pinnacle of seeking after God’s own heart. Love is the foundation for everything, especially in our desire to obey God. When we love Him, trusting and reveling in His presence in our lives becomes easier.

It also impacts every aspect of our lives, such as choosing a circle of friends who share our desire to love God.

     2. Obey God and Do His Will

The simplest step to becoming someone after God’s own heart is to obey Him and do as He says.

“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”—1 John 5:3

Obedience is a necessary part of our relationship with God. We must submit to God’s desires and seek whatever it is that the heart of God seeks. In doing so, we become cleansed in heart and know that we desire only the good things God desires.

     3. Please God Before Men

A worldly leader desires to follow men because he aspires to please them. This kind of leader revels in men’s praise and ultimately desires worldly possessions. On the other hand, a Spirit-filled leader desires to follow God because he respects, worships, and fears God.

When we have a deep relationship with God and become men and women after His own heart, it’s Him we seek to please, not men.

“For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”—Galatians 1:10

     4. Pray Regularly

Prayer is the best form of communication with God. When we pray, we become one with God. We are able to express our desires, sorrows, and disappointments freely. Prayer also becomes a platform for seeking forgiveness and asking for cleansing, especially during times of need.

     5. Serve Your Generation

David was committed to seeking after God’s own heart. Thus, he followed God’s example and served his generation. Like God, he served, provided salvation, and forgave their sins. To become a man or woman after God’s own heart, you must strive to serve others and do this with love and kindness. As believers, we have a responsibility to advance the kingdom of God and bring others closer to Him.
